Objectives:
Students in grades 7 & 8 will be able to demonstrate the effect of salt on ice
Students will be able to measure the temperature of ice
Students will be able to measure the temperature of ice and salt
Students will prepare a graph using the temperatures recorded on their data table
Materials needed:
For each group:
Crushed ice
5 identical containers (2 oz. cups)
5 thermometers that record -20o
5 labels
5 spoons to stir ice
20 grams salt
1 ml measuring scoop
Strategy
Label each cup with a number 1-5
Place crushed ice in each cup to the same level
Stir all the cups
Record the temperatures of all the cups
Add 1 ml of salt to cup #1
Add 2 ml of salt to cup #2
Add 3 ml of salt to cup #3
Add 4 ml of salt to cup #4
Do not add anything to cup #5
Stir all cups again, put thermometers in each cup, and take temperatures
immediately.
Record temperatures for the next 12 minutes on a data table.
Produce a graph of the temperature over time for each cup.
Use various symbols for the different cups (Dotted line for cup #1, dashed line
for cup #2, x's for cup #3, o's for cup #4, and a line for cup #5) or use
different colors of pen (pencil).
